Acne Facials in Nosara: A Holistic Approach to Clearer, Healthier Skin
Acne isn't always about having “oily” skin. In Nosara's tropical climate, the combination of heat, humidity, sweat, sunscreen, salt water, and frequent cleansing can leave skin both congested and dehydrated at the same time.
At SĀGARA Rituals in Guiones, Nosara, our approach to acne facials is centered around understanding the skin rather than simply stripping away oil.
Acne + Dehydrated Skin
When acne-prone skin feels congested, it's tempting to cleanse more, exfoliate more, and avoid moisturizer. But overdoing it can compromise the skin barrier and increase dehydration and irritation.
The right kind of hydration is important even for oily or acne-prone skin.
An acne facial at SĀGARA focuses on gentle exfoliation, extractions when appropriate, hydration, calming inflammation, and supporting healthy barrier function. The goal is to help bring the skin back into balance without unnecessarily overwhelming it.
LED Light Therapy for Acne
SĀGARA's Clarifying Facial incorporates Celluma LED light therapy to support breakout-prone skin without aggressive exfoliation.
Blue LED light helps target C. acnes, the bacteria associated with inflammatory acne, while red LED light helps calm visible inflammation and supports the skin's natural repair processes.
Using blue and red light alongside thoughtful extractions, hydration, and barrier support allows us to address active breakouts while still caring for the overall health of the skin.
Looking Beyond the Breakout
We also take a holistic approach to understanding patterns in the skin.
Traditional Chinese face mapping associates different areas of the face with different systems and patterns within the body. While face mapping isn't a medical diagnostic tool, it can offer an interesting framework for looking beyond an individual blemish and considering factors such as stress, hormones, digestion, lifestyle, skincare habits, and environment.
Where you're breaking out, when it started, what products you're using, and what's happening in your daily life can all provide useful context when developing a skincare plan.

Ancient Wisdom. Modern Skincare.
Nature vs. Science: Why We Believe Skincare Needs Both
Discover SĀGARA's approach to skincare in Nosara, blending botanical ingredients, ancient facial techniques and modern skincare technology for healthy, resilient skin.
At SĀGARA, we believe the future of skincare is both nature and science.
Skincare is often presented as a choice. Clinical or holistic. Botanicals or biotechnology. Ancient wisdom or modern innovation.
We don’t believe it has to be one or the other.
Some of the most beautiful ingredients used in skincare have been around for centuries. Others are the result of modern research and technology. What matters most is how they work with the skin and how thoughtfully they are used.
What We Look for in Skincare
Rather than defining skincare as strictly “natural” or “clinical,” we look for ingredients and treatments that support the skin as a whole.
We want to calm inflammation, maintain a healthy skin barrier and microbiome, encourage cellular renewal, protect against oxidative stress, and support the connection between the skin and nervous system.
The goal isn’t to overwhelm the skin. It’s to give it what it needs to function well.
Nature's Ingredients We Love
There is so much intelligence in the natural world. A few ingredients we return to again and again include:
Manuka Honey is loved for its soothing, hydrating, and skin-supportive properties. Traditionally used to support wound and burn healing, Manuka honey is naturally rich in compounds that help calm the skin and support its healing process. In skincare, we especially love it for dry, irritated, blemish-prone, or compromised skin that needs a little extra nourishment and care.
Colloidal Oatmeal is one of our favorite ingredients for comforting sensitive, dry, irritated, or compromised skin. Rich in naturally occurring lipids and soothing compounds, it helps support the skin barrier, reduce moisture loss, and calm visible irritation. It is especially beautiful for sensitive and reactive skin types or anytime the barrier needs extra support.
Centella Asiatica, also known as Cica or Gotu Kola, has a long history of use in traditional healing practices. In modern skincare, it is loved for its calming and restorative properties and its ability to support the skin’s natural repair process. We reach for Centella when the skin feels inflamed, sensitized, or simply in need of restoration.
Bakuchiol, a botanical retinol alternative that shows to deliver nearly the same benefits without the harmful downsides of retinol. While Retinol is a powerful anti-aging ingredient the harsh sun in Nosara makes consistent use of retinol more challenging and can sometimes do more harm than good. Bakuchiol offers a gentler approach for supporting firmness, texture, and overall skin health without increasing the skin’s sensitivity in the same way.
Helichrysum, sometimes called the “everlasting flower,” has been traditionally used for its soothing and restorative qualities. We love it for skin that appears stressed, irritated, or depleted, and for its ability to complement a calming, barrier-supportive skincare ritual. It is a beautiful example of a botanical with deep traditional roots that continues to have a place in modern skincare.
Blue Lotus has been used ceremonially and traditionally for centuries, particularly in ancient Egyptian culture. Rich in naturally occurring antioxidants and plant compounds, it is valued in skincare for its soothing and conditioning qualities. We love Blue Lotus not only for the skin, but for the ritual surrounding it, bringing a sense of calm, beauty, and intention to the experience.
Blue Clitoria, also known as Butterfly Pea Flower, grows abundantly here in Costa Rica. Rich in antioxidant anthocyanins, it is traditionally used in teas and herbal rituals and loved for its soothing qualities and connection to the land around us.
These ingredients have a long history of use, and many are now being studied through a modern scientific lens as we continue to understand more about how they interact with the skin.
The Science We Love
We also believe in intelligent formulations and evidence-informed ingredients.
Peptides are small chains of amino acids that act as building blocks for proteins like collagen and elastin. We love them for supporting firmness, resilience, and smoother-looking skin, especially as part of a long-term healthy-aging routine.
Lactic Acid is one of our favorite gentle exfoliating acids. It helps lift away dull surface cells, encourage cellular renewal, and improve texture and brightness while also offering hydrating benefits. Compared with more aggressive exfoliation, it can be a beautiful option when we want results without unnecessarily stripping the skin.
Niacinamide, a form of vitamin B3, is a true multitasker. It helps strengthen the skin barrier, support moisture retention, calm visible redness, balance excess oil, and improve the appearance of uneven tone and texture.
Stabilized Vitamin C provides powerful antioxidant support, helping defend the skin against environmental stress while supporting collagen production and a brighter, more even complexion. We favor stable, thoughtfully formulated forms that deliver the benefits of vitamin C while remaining gentle on the skin.
Hyaluronic Acid is naturally found within our skin and has an incredible ability to bind water. Used topically, it helps draw hydration into the skin, creating a plumper, softer, more replenished appearance, something we especially love in Nosara’s sun, salt, and heat.
Ceramides are lipids naturally found within the skin barrier that help keep moisture in and environmental stressors out. Replenishing them through skincare can be especially beneficial for dry, sensitized, over-exfoliated, or sun-exposed skin.
Exosomes represent an exciting and emerging area of regenerative skincare. They are tiny extracellular vesicles involved in cellular communication and are being studied for their potential role in skin repair and rejuvenation. While the technology is promising, research and regulation are still evolving, so we believe in approaching exosomes with both curiosity and discernment.
Ancient Wisdom Meets Modern Innovation
The same philosophy extends beyond ingredients and into the treatment room.
Our approach combines hands-on techniques rooted in traditional practices, including gua sha, Ayurvedic Marma point therapy, Kobido facial massage, and principles inspired by Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Alongside these practices, we incorporate modern esthetic technologies such as LED light therapy, microcurrent, and high frequency when appropriate for the skin.
If you are looking for a facial in Nosara, this balance is at the heart of the SĀGARA experience: thoughtful skincare, intentional touch, and modern technology without losing the ritual of caring for yourself.
What We Choose to Leave Behind
Being open to both nature and science doesn’t mean we believe every ingredient or trend belongs in our treatment room.
We are thoughtful about what we use and favor formulations that respect the skin barrier. We choose to avoid or minimize ingredients and practices that don't align with that philosophy, including parabens and phthalates, added fragrance or parfum, oxybenzone and octinoxate, certain linear silicones, animal testing, and unnecessarily harsh formulations that can disrupt the skin barrier.
Our approach isn’t about fear of ingredients. It’s about being intentional.
Our Philosophy
Healthy skin isn’t created by one miracle ingredient, one machine, or one perfect routine.
We believe it is cultivated over time through mindful rituals, thoughtful botanicals, intelligent formulations, intentional touch, and something that often gets left out of conversations about skincare: joy.
Caring for your skin should feel good.
Ancient Wisdom. Modern Skincare.
Sun Protection: A Surfer’s Guide to Healthy Skin in Nosara, Costa Rica
A surfer’s guide to healthy skin in Nosara. Discover pre and post-surf skincare, mineral SPF, sun protection, and how a restorative facial in Nosara can replenish skin after days of salt, sun, and surf.
ENJOY THE SUN, PROTECT YOUR SKIN
Living in Nosara means a lot of time in the sun and ocean, and I wouldn’t want it any other way. But sun exposure is also one of the biggest contributors to premature aging, pigmentation and changes in the skin over time.
For me, it’s not about avoiding the sun. It’s about protecting our skin well so we can keep enjoying the ocean and the life we love.
CHOOSE YOUR SURF SPF
What we put on our skin before entering the ocean matters. At SĀGARA, we favor mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide for broad-spectrum protection that is gentle on skin and more mindful of our marine environment.
For surfing, choose a water-resistant SPF 30–50 and apply generously before paddling out. A little visible zinc is a trade-off we're happy to make for our skin and the ocean we love.
FREAKS OF NATURE PEAK PERFORMANCE SPF 50
Founded by 11x World Surf Champion Kelly Slater, Freaks of Nature is made for life in the water. This 100% mineral SPF 50 is lightweight, fragrance-free, water-resistant for up to 80 minutes, with minimal white cast.
PURA VIDA SUNBLOCK — OUR LOCAL PICK
Made in Costa Rica and made for our tropical environment, PURA VIDA Sunblock is the option for those who don't mind seeing their sun protection.
The consistency is thick and intentionally sits visibly on the skin. While it may not disappear like an everyday facial SPF, that's part of what we love about it for surfing—you can actually see where you've applied it and where you may need a little more coverage.
Apply generously before paddling out, paying extra attention to the nose, cheekbones, forehead and other areas that receive the most sun.
ADD A SURF HAT
For long sessions or those perfect days when the conditions stay offshore and you just don’t want to get out of the water, a surf hat is great added protection. The Nosara sun and midday heat are strong, so I love the extra shade for the face, scalp, ears and eyes. Pair it with a good mineral SPF and keep surfing.
SĀGARA TIP: The best surf sunscreen is the one you’ll apply generously and consistently. After days of sun your skin can feel depleted and dehydrated. A restorative facial in Nosara, rich in antioxidants and humectants, can help replenish and bring the skin back into balance.
